Dr Lachlan McDowall - Cardiologist Cardiac Electrophysiologist (EP)

Dr Lachlan McDowall

BSc (Hons 1) MBBS PhD FRACP

Cardiologist & Cardiac Electrophysiologist (EP) based in Hornsby on Sydney’s North Shore & Gosford on the Central Coast.

I am a Clinical Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist practicing in private consultation rooms at Hornsby Cardiac Diagnostic Unit on the North Shore of Sydney, Australia and the Gosford Cardiac Clinic on the NSW Central Coast. As a Cardiac Electrophysiologist I specialise in arrhythmia management and perform electrophysiology (EP) studies and ablations and implantation and management of pacemakers and defibrillators. I manage a broad range of General Cardiology conditions, but with a special interest and subspecialty training in brady and tachyarrhythmias including atrial fibrillation (AF) / atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular and atrial ectopic beats and ventricular tachycardia (VT) causing symptoms such as palpitations and syncope. I am able to provide patient care as a cardiologist and perform cardiac electrophysiology study / ablation procedures and implantation of pacemakers / defibrillators at Gosford Private Hospital and The Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH). I also attend Gosford Public Hospital to provide a public pacemaker implantation service. I have a close association with cardiologists at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), North Shore Private (NSP), Hornsby Hospital and Newcastle Private Hospital and John Hunter Hospital. I have a vision to provide complete Electrophysiology and General Cardiology care to my patients, providing a service that extends from Sydney’s North Shore to the Central Coast.

I completed three degrees and postdoctoral research at the University of Sydney over a period of 12 years, first graduating with a Bachelor of Science with first class honours (2003). I was subsequently awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award Scholarship to complete a PhD in Physiology, the Faculty of Medicine (2007) and finally postgraduate medicine, awarded a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (2011).

I spent my postgraduate clinical years as an Intern, Resident, Physician training and finally Cardiology Advanced Training at Royal North Shore Hospital becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and Cardiologist in 2018. I followed this with subspecialty training as a Clinical Electrophysiology and Pacing Fellow at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane (2019) and Toronto General Hospital in Canada (2020-21). Through this I gained extensive experience in the management of arrhythmias, diagnostic electrophysiology studies, simple and complex cardiac ablations and the implantation and management of pacemakers and defibrillators. Concurrent with my medical training I continued post-doctoral research in Physiology and continued lecturing at University of Sydney concurrent with my PhD, medical degree and into my clinical years.

I have returned to Australia and rejoined my established network on Sydney’s North Shore and NSW Central Coast to provide a full range of subspecialty Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing services, while also managing a broad range of adult General Cardiology.

Outside of my practice I enjoy staying active outdoors with my wife and young boys and as the footy coach.
